DEPTH AND DESIRE

Depth and Desire showcased four world premieres with original choreography by Artistic Director Claire Solis and distinguished guest artists Jared Brunson, Nataniel Taylor, and Ryo Munakata. Each work explores passion in its many forms—raw, joyful, tumultuous, and transcendent—set to a dynamic musical landscape. Solis's latest chorographic masterpiece, Foolish Love, explored the soul-stirring blues of Etta James and featured "If I Can’t Have You," "One for My Baby," and "You Can't Talk to a Fool" by Etta James.

Returning to CNYB, nationally acclaimed choreographer Jared Brunson presented Cloud Nine, a vibrant and uplifting piece that captivated audiences.  Syracuse native and rising star Nataniel Taylor's breakout choreographic work Surge seamlessly weaves technical brilliance with visceral energy. Ryo Munakata’s Held is an intimate exploration of connection, support, and unseen presence featuring two guest artists from Ballet of New York.

The production culminated in a striking reimagining of Carmen, choreographed by Claire Solis with lighting by Alex Jainchill. This bold interpretation breathes new life into Bizet’s iconic tale of passion, obsession, and tragedy, offering a visually stunning and emotionally gripping experience. Don Jose’s jealous obsession with Carmen culminates in tragedy when she meets the dashing toreador Escamillo.  Featuring special guest artist Aidan Carrasquel from Ballet San Antonio, the performance left a lasting impression long after the final curtain fell.

Audience reactions were overwhelmingly positive. One attendee shared: “Poignant grace, beauty, elegance, strength, and fire! Depth & Desire is stellar!” Eileen H. This dynamic and memorable production was unlike anything Central New York audiences have seen before.
